A Journey of Hope: The SELF Program

Stacy is a dedicated home visitor in the SELF Program. As a mother of three and a professional with a background in child and youth care, Stacy found her calling in a program that empowers women and children to reclaim their lives after abuse.

The heart of SELF lies in its 1:1 visits. For Stacy, these visits are more than just a job; they are opportunities to nurture relationships. “Seeing how far we’ve come over the last two years is incredibly rewarding,” she reflects. Through these visits, Stacy and her team create safe spaces where mothers can share their stories, fears, and dreams.

Building a Community

One of the most transformative aspects of the SELF Program is the sense of community it fosters. Group gatherings allow mothers to connect not only with the program coordinators but also with one another. “It’s wonderful to see how much they’ve grown socially and emotionally,” says Stacy. From hesitant participants to confident friends, these women's evolution is a testament to the power of community support.

Stacy recalls a particularly inspiring story of a mother who joined the program struggling with self-esteem. Over the course of 30 weeks, she blossomed. "She’s learned to set boundaries and has built a strong support system,” Stacy proudly notes. This mother’s newfound confidence has ripple effect, positively impacting her children and transforming their family dynamic.

Small Victories, Big Impact

The impact of SELF is profound but often measured in small victories. Stacy emphasizes the importance of celebrating these milestones, whether it’s securing stable housing or learning to navigate public transportation. “For some moms, these small steps are huge victories,” she explains. “We support them as they navigate these changes and gain confidence.”

One mother poignantly expressed her gratitude, saying, "Now that I’ve met you, I feel like I have a sister." Such sentiments highlight the deep bonds formed within the program, where families see Stacy and her colleagues as service providers and integral parts of their lives.

A Call to Action

The SELF Program is a lifeline for mothers and children. As Stacy shares, “We help moms rebuild their lives after leaving abusive relationships. We are the friends who show up once a week, ensuring they have access to food banks, doctor’s appointments, and quality early childhood education.” This unwavering support is essential for mothers and children to thrive after abuse.
